The Remote Laboratory of Automatic Control of the University of León is an educational platform that allows students, teachers, professionals and users of control and automation systems to interact with simulated and real remotely available physical systems with similar characteristics to those found in real industrial automations. 

The design of the platform is based on a three-tier structure with an open, flexible and non-proprietary nature, oriented to ease the addition and management of industrial processes. From a dual teaching-learning perspective, the aims of the LRA are as follows:

  • To be a high-value resource for faculty in theoretical lessons, providing real-life examples of the concepts of automatic control.
  • To clarify the links between theoretical content and their real technical implementation, studying them through direct access to real industrial equipment.
  • To facilitate the shared use of expensive physical resources and the development of laboratory networks.
  • To enable active and cooperative learning among students.
  • To compare the technical characteristics of different expensive technologies.

From a research perspective, the technology platform enables work on the following research lines:

  • Remote monitoring of complex industrial processes.
  • Development of advanced monitoring tools based on machine learning and dimensionality reduction techniques.
  • Critical infrastructure monitoring and cybersecurity.
  • Energy monitoring in buildings and industrial facilities.
  • Intelligent data analysis.
  • Application of advanced control techniques.
  • Research in Smart grid technologies.

Physical components involved in process control. For example: Controllers, PLCs, RTUs, PC Industrial, Robots, Drivers, etc.

Field technologies - Models and pilot plants

Pilot plants, models and elements which implement real processes in the laboratory.

Field technologies - Real installations

Real installations which the laboratory gives access to. For example: energy supervision systems, climate supervision and control systems, etc.

Field technologies - Teaching equipment

Material or equipment designed to facilitate the learning process of a determined subject. For example: training simulators, panels, trainers, modular devices, etc.

Monitoring technologies

Physical components involved in process supervision and data concentration and cleaning so they can then be sent to the next levels. For example: SCADA systems, storage servers, HMIs, etc.

Monitoring tools

Software tools used to monitor processes carried out in the laboratory. For example: WinCC, Vijeo Citect, and the laboratory´s own monitoring tools.

Simulation tools

Simulation tools of real components inside an industrial architecture. For example: network simulators, operation level components simulators, monitoring level components simulators, control level components simulators, field level components simulators, etc.

Software for the management an use of the physical component

Software tools used to manage, programme and configure the laboratory´s physical components. For example: Simatic-S7, Unity Pro, LabVIEW, etc.

Tools for communications management

Software tools used for managing laboratory communications (VPNs,...).
