OpenSubtitles data breached after ransom payment

OpenSubtitles, the largest subtitle download site on the Internet, suffered an extortion attempt in August 2021, whereby a ransom in BTC was demanded in order not to publicly disclose its user table in SQL format, due to the low level of security of the SuperAdmin password.

The company agreed to pay the ransom, which did not prevent the publication of 6.7 million emails, usernames, passwords, IP addresses and locations by the attacker.
