Mattel lost almost 3$ million due to a classic phishing

03/29/2016

On April 30, 2015 the company Mattel suffered an attempted fraud of nearly $ 3 million, through what is known as BEC SCAM. The scammers sent an email to the financial department supplanting the new CEO and ordering a payment of nearly 3 million to the Chinese bank Wenzhou, levering that it was the end of the month and that few days earlier had been a change in executive management.

Hours later, the company discovered the scam and quickly contacted the FBI and his bank, but money had already been transferred. However, the Chinese bank was closed because the May 1 is banking holiday in China, and the company was able to contact the Chinese bank and the Chinese authorities, blocking the operation and recovering the money days later.
