The council of Jerez de la Frontera is the victim of a cyberattack
The local government of the city of Jerez de la Frontera has suffered a ransomware-type cyberattack that encrypted the files hosted on more than 50 computer servers, paralyzing, in this way, the services of the municipality itself along with other public services dependent on it. Several affected computers showed messages demanding the payment of a ransom in bitcoins, for the recovery of the kidnapped material.
The consistory has reported that the cyberattack has been carried out using a trojan called Emotet, specialized in the theft of financial data, in combination with Ryuk, which is the malware that encrypted the information.
The mayor of the city, Mamen Sánchez, requested the collaboration of several experts from the CCN (Spanish National Cryptologic Center), a body dependent on the CNI (Spanish National Intelligence Center) who, after an on-site investigation, confirmed that there was no data leak from the servers.
